Hello everyone, and welcome to my SodaStream Fountain Jet review. In this review, I will share my experience with the SodaStream Fountain Jet home soda maker. I have been using this machine for about a year now, and feel that I have enough insight into its workings that I can give helpful info to anyone curious about purchasing this machine.
In this SodaStream Fountain Jet review, I will discuss how this machine works, what my personal experiences with it have been, pros and cons, and what others think about it. Finally, for anyone interested in purchasing this home soda maker, I have provided a link at the end of this article to where you can get it for the best price online.
What is the SodaStream Fountain Jet?
The SodaStream Fountain Jet is supposedly the most affordable bang-for-your-buck home soda maker kit on the market. As many of you already know, I have owned and tested many of these SodaStream machines, and this is one of my favorites. The Fountain Jet is actually one of the oldest mini carbonator units around, mostly because of its reliable and versatile design. The Fountain Jet is SodaStream’s entry level model and is perfect for anyone new to the fun world of home soda making.
The SodaStream Fountain Jet turns regular chilled tap water into sparkling water in about 30 seconds. Simply fill the BPA-Free plastic bottle with cold tap water, screw the bottle to the Fountain Jet machine, and infuse it with carbonation. You can then add a measured amount of SodaStream flavor syrup, to craft your own sodas at home.
But lets get down to business and take a closer look at the SodaStream Fountain Jet!
SodaStream Fountain Jet Dimensions and Features
Colors: Available in 2 tone black/silver, black/red, or white
Bottle Capacity: The Fountain Jet uses reusable 1 litre BPA-Free plastic bottles with hermetically sealed caps
Does not require electricity or batteries for use.
What I love most about the SodaStream Fountain Jet is its versatility and portable nature. I have brought my Fountain Jet to the office for co-workers birthdays, in the RV for trips up the mountain, and outdoors for family picnics at the park and beach. The other larger models are just a little to big too lug around, and the Fountain Jet is the perfect size to bring out. Plus this one does not require electricity or batteries for use, while many of the other ones do.
The SodaStream Fountain Jet is also the most affordable model with the capacity to use the expanded 33oz carbonator tank, allowing you make double the soda that you normally would on the smaller 14.5oz tank.
Using the SodaStream Fountain Jet Home Soda Maker
The SodaStream Fountain Jet was designed primarily with function in mind.
I have used this little home soda maker to craft delicious bubbly drinks during the kids birthday parties and gatherings over the holidays, and the Fountain Jet has always been a hit. Create anything from soft drinks and sparkling juices to energy drinks and mildly flavored seltzer, the options are only as limited as your imagination.
Obviously everyone will have a slightly different idea of what an ideal drink consists of. I think that I can safely say the SodaStream Fountain Jet can cover all the bases. I have mixed dozens of different flavor combinations up and still find new tastes that appeal to me more than the last. If you prefer your beverage slightly more fizzy, just add a little more carbonation to give it that extra bite.
SodaStream has almost a hundred different flavors of sodas, sparkling teas and juices, light and mild sparkling water mixes, and even an energy drink that strongly resembles Red Bull. All these options are made without high fructose corn syrup or aspartame.
I won’t pretend that they taste exactly like the big brand-names like Coca-Cola, but the SodaStream drinks are refreshingly good in their own right. My personal favorites are still the Root Beer and Ginger Ale, although I have made several delicious mixes of less common flavors.
Ease of Use:
The SodaStream Fountain Jet, as an entry level model in the SodaStream lineup, is very straightforward to operate.
Simply fill the bottle with chilled water, screw the bottle onto the machine, carbonate 3-5 times, add flavor, shake and enjoy! It really is that easy.
Over the last year of its employment in my kitchen I have found that the drinks made with the Fountain Jet stay carbonated for about 7-10 days. This is actually quite remarkable if you think of how fast the carbonation leaves store bought bottles, which is usually about 3 days.
As long as the beverage you have made is tightly sealed, you should be able to enjoy your fizzy creation for about a week before it goes flat.
For all you eco-minded people out there, you’ll be happy to know that this product is a way more environmentally friendly way of enjoying carbonated beverages. Rather than going through tons of bottles and gasoline transporting pop to your house (not to mention from a warehouse to the store), you can enjoy your beverages right at home using tap water.
Plus, instead of lugging heavy cases and large bottles from the store, my family saves a lot of fridge space by having this machine in our home.
I have about 30 flavors in the pantry allowing me to make just about any flavored drink you can imagine. I have really enjoyed the ability to make a smaller amount of soft drink as well, instead of wasting the last part of a 2 litre bottle that will inevitably go flat before its consumed. The SodaStream Fountain Jet has greatly reduced the amount of cans and bottles that gather for recycling.
Finally, the biggest benefit is the taste. You can make some great tasting, refreshing carbonated beverages with this machine – which is especially great for family functions and parties. The portability of this device means you can take it virtually anywhere, making it a great option for people on the go.
Although the SodaStream Fountain Jet is great to take around with you, it should be treated with care as it does not take a lot of abuse to damage it. That being said, it has survived a year at my home with two kids and almost daily use.
The 1 litre bottles are NOT machine washable. The hot water will weaken the plastic, and ultimately cause them to fracture under the pressure of carbonation and leak. They can be easily washed by hand however, and will last around 3 years. Replacement and extra bottles are about $10.
Unlike some of the fancier models, the functional SodaStream Fountain Jet does not have a gauge to show you the remaining levels of gas in the carbonator, so you will have to keep track of this yourself. It will be obvious when the gas is running out, and I always have a spare tank or two when I know I am having company over and plan to use it. CO2 tank replacements and refills are not that expensive, and depending where you go they run about $5-$15 .
Other SodaStream Fountain Jet Reviews
To make this article as detailed as possible, I have included some excerpts from other SodaStream Fountain Jet reviews. These excerpts should give you a better idea of what others think of this device.
“So now, instead of lugging litres of seltzer from the store to home (and wasting so much plastic from the bottles) I save time and money — and no hassle!” Emily W. Amazon.com
“Flat water based drinks are missing something. And what’s missing is that carbonation and the SodaStream will add that for you, and allow low calorie flavored drinks to taste better and be better for you” Doug, Amazon.com
“We really love this new “toy”. We don’t drink a lot of soda, but we do enjoy seltzer/club soda, and making our own flavors. It’s easy and fun to use, and the carbonation lasts SO much longer than regular bottles of club soda.” D. Harford. Amazon.com
If you have never owned a home soda maker before, this is probably one of the best entry level units that you can find. It is also one of the most affordable as well at around $80 for the SodaStream Fountain Jet starter kit. I know this machine paid itself off within the first couple months of me bringing it home, as my family tends to consume a lot of soda pop.
Being a family where soft drinks is the beverage of choice, I was also very happy to know that the sugar and calories in a glass of SodaStream pop is about 30% that of the regular pre-packaged pop. The diet flavors are also free of aspartame, using Splenda as an alternative which tastes much better.
The SodaStream Fountain Jet is the perfect choice for anyone that has always been curious about home soda makers and wants to try one out without investing a lot of money. It is easy to operate, inexpensive to use and wonderfully refreshing to enjoy.
