sodastream source optionsHello again my friends, and welcome back for an exciting and in-depth review of the SodaStream Source. The Source is one of the newer models of home soda makers offered by SodaStream.

In this SodaStream Source review, I will look into what makes this machine a great addition to the kitchen, and address some of the issues I have found while testing this new model.

First I will discuss exactly how this machine works. Then I will provide my own personal opinion of this machine, supplemented with other user reviews and a pros and cons list. Finally, I’ll discuss where you can get the best deal on this machine when you buy it online. If you’re looking for the definitive SodaStream Source review, you’ve certainly come to the right place!

What is the SodaStream Source?

sodastream source frontThe SodaStream Source is one of the newest additions to the SodaStream lineup of do-it-yourself home soda maker machines. The Source uses a one button push design to quickly turn chilled tap water into refreshing bubbly soda water.

By adding in the soda syrups or other flavors from SodaStream, you can turn that soda water into all sorts of soft drinks and fizzy beverages, without the waste of bottles and cans from the supermarket.

The Source was designed by Yves Behar, and has a brilliant streamlined design that is pleasing to the eye while maintaining a sharp, modern look.

The SodaStream Source features a clever new snap on design for the bottle to be attached quickly and easily. The top front section is pushed down to carbonate your water without the need for complex levers or buttons.

I had such an easy time using this machine, and the drinks it produces were fantastic.

sodastream source boxOf all the SodaStream home soda maker kits that I have tested out or bought for my own home, the SodaStream Source was very convenient for outdoor use. Needing no power supply like the bigger Revolution model, the SodaStream Source was quite versatile no matter where I brought it.

The features that make the SodaStream Source a big competitor in the ever-growing homemade soda market are quite easy to see, and even easier to use.

First of all, the great new design of the snap on bottle mechanism makes it much faster to attach bottles than the older screw-in system that the earlier SodaStream Genesis model used. My SodaStream Source quickly filled up the bottle with carbonation by just holding down the top section of the machine, which functions as the main carbonator button.

The new light-up display is much more elegant looking than the Fizz Chip design, using illustrated drops to indicate the level of fizz that has been put into your drink as you fill it up. I have found that this gauge is quite accurate, and have never had a problem with carbonation quality.

Using the SodaStream Source

sodastream source on counterAfter trying out the Source at a friend’s wedding (as the caterers were old friends of mine), I decided that I needed to go out and get one myself, so that I could write a proper SodaStream Source review. In the rest of the article, I’ll bring down exactly what my experiences have been like with this machine so far.

In all the other models that I have tested, the carbonation sounds usually made by these types of machines resembles a buzzing or fart noise, which my kids never seem to stop laughing at. The SodaStream Source, however, is the exception to that.

The Source seems to make a higher pitched squeal noise as it carbonates, which isn’t exceptionally pleasing to the ears. It is not loud, and it doesn’t last for more than a few seconds, but I figured it was worth noting.

The light up display with the graphic raindrops is a nice touch to the design that lets you actively keep track of the fizz level of your drink as you’re carbonating it. I had to make sure that the bottle was sitting properly, and that the top of the bottle was free of water, as it seemed that the carbonation cycle did not go as smoothly if there was anything preventing a solid seal when the bottle snaps in.

The carbonation length is determined, of course, by how much fizz you put into it when crafting your drink. The beverages I have made usually last 3-4 days when a little pressure is added, but last up to 10 days when fully carbonated and sealed in the fridge.

*Tip – For some reason, ice cold water does not seem to take the carbonation cycle as well in this machine, so I recommend using only chilled water from the refrigerator.

Drink Quality

Glass of Lemon Lime Soda with PourThe quality of drinks that I have been able to make with the SodaStream Source is just as good as any of the other machines. I tend to make my drinks extra fizzy, as I like the added bite of excess carbonation.

Obviously different drinks taste differently when carbonated at various levels, so feel free to push the boundaries on what you are comfortable with and I am certain that you will always find something new and exotic to share with family and guests.

Ease of Use

The wonderful new design gets rid of the old screw top used by the base-model Genesis system, and instead uses an easy snap on system that connects the bottle in one smooth move.

Carbonation is also very straightforward in this model. All you have to do is push down on the top front section of the body, and the bubbles start rushing into the water. You don’t have to put too much pressure onto the button, and it moves smoothly (as long as you keep it clean) and I have not had any problems with spilling or overflowing.

I particularly enjoyed the graphics of watching the raindrops light up as the carbonation increases, and I have found the readings to be consistent and accurate. I have found this more engaging than the SodaStream Fizz’s “Fizz Chip”, even though it does lack the gauge for CO2 gas remaining in the tank.

sodastream source whiteAs with all SodaStream home soda maker kits, the Source will save you lots of waste from bottles and cans. My wife used to have lots of glass bottles from the sparkling water that she drinks, and the SodaStream machines have cut down the amount of glass and plastic bottles significantly.

The reduced sugar and no high-fructose corn syrup in the flavors of SodaStream are also much better for the health of my family, which is a great relief as we do tend to consume a lot of soft drinks.

I actually prefer the BPA-Free plastic 1 litre bottles to the glass carafes, as they are easier for the kids to use, and I find they stay carbonated for longer periods of time.

One of the main benefits of the SodaStream Source, even over other models by SodaStream, is the hassle free process of making a drink. It is quick and easy, not needing to get a lot of things dirty, and just a very convenient system in general.

Also, because the SodaStream Source does not need electricity, it can be used outdoors as well as inside. This makes it perfect for use on the patio and for gatherings at the park, beach or tailgate parties after a game.

I have found a couple things about the SodaStream Source that were noteworthy enough to make it to this section.

SodaStream Revolution BottleThe sound made when carbonating the water is a little annoying. It isn’t anything that would cause you to send it back, or hit the machine with something, but I have found that it gets a little irritating if you are trying to make a drink at night, and don’t want to disturb people. I woke my mother-in-law with this noise, and she wasn’t too pleased with me (though this is nothing new…haha).

Also, the snap on bottle system, while pretty easy to use, does need to be maintained as well. If you do not keep the area where the top of the bottle meets the machine clean and dry, it can cause the SodaStream Source to not carbonate the water thoroughly.

Again, this will not be a problem if you keep your machine clean and make sure the bottle tops aren’t dripping wet, but it can result in not-very-fizzy drinks if you under-carbonate the water and mix the soda syrup in without making sure it was done properly.

There is no gauge that keeps track of the CO2 remaining in the carbonator, so you will either have to keep track of this in your head, which is almost impossible to do (especially after the kids learn how to operate the machine) or keep a spare carbonator or two handy.

The SodaStream Source also will NOT take the larger 33oz CO2 canister, and you will go through gas at a little faster pace if you like your drinks extra fizzy, as I do.

All in all, these “drawbacks” are not true disadvantages to this machine as much as they are simply things to keep in mind when using it.

Concluding Thoughts

As an avid soft drink fan as well as a long-time SodaStream user, I would highly recommend the SodaStream Source for anyone looking for an easy-to-use, high-quality home soda making machine.

I love the versatility of being able to take it out to the patio or into the yard when the family or guests come over, and the kids have a great time making fizzy drinks for themselves. The Source soda maker is one of the best bang-for-your-buck machines available in the SodaStream lineup and makes enjoying soft drinks healthier and easier.
